The name of this series, "Prying Open My Third Eye", comes from lyrics in the song "Third Eye" written by Maynard James Keenan, the singer of the American rock band Tool. In the song the experience of altered states of consciousness from psychedelics are described as "prying open my third eye", but considering the heavy use of sexual innuendo scattered throughout much of Maynard's works, any sexually suggestive interpretations of his lyrics are surely invited. For other examples look up the Tool song "Stinkfist" to hear anal-fisting evoked as a metaphor for the search for emotion and meaning in a heavily-medicated, apathetic, and desensitized world of overstimulation. Also look up the Tool song "Ticks and Leeches" to hear choking while deepthroating evoked as a metaphor for karmic retribution against "blood-sucking parasititic little ticks" and "thievin bastards" who have "taken all you can take" until we've "got nothing left to give to you". The lyrics invite leeches to "suck me dry" while declaring "I hope you're choking, I hope you choke on this". The juxtaposition of absurdity with profundity is Maynard's signature.
